Fanfold vs Roll Thermal Labels: UK Guide

If you're printing more than 20 labels a day, the fanfold vs roll question matters. They're the same label material in different physical formats — but the format changes your packing-bench ergonomics, jam rate and refill speed.

Where fanfold wins

• Sits flat on the bench — no spindle, no holder, no wobble.
• Faster to refill — drop a new stack in, feed the first label, done.
• Lower jam rate on most direct thermal printers because there's no roll inertia.
• Stacks store neatly when not in use — better for shared spaces.

Where rolls still win

• Mobile / handheld printers (Zebra ZQ series, Brother RJ) only take rolls.
• If your printer is wall-mounted or sits on a shelf above the bench.
• Industrial label applicators are roll-based.

Fanfold and roll labels are typically priced within a few pence per 500 labels.
